3 East 52nd Street
NYC

September 11th, 2024 - New York, New York. The legendary French restaurant

La Grenouille, located at 3 East 52nd Street, is closing its doors this week.

Owner Philippe Masson, whose parents Charles and Gisele founded this beloved bastion of French gastronomy in 1962, is moving on to explore new terrain and pursue other dreams.

La Grenouille has long been a New York institution, famed for its flower displays, gilded luxury and luminary clientele. Among its devotees were Gregory Peck, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Sidney Poitier, Salvador Dali, Sophia Loren, David Bowie, Truman Capote, Lee Radziwill a veritable who's who of the world's most beautiful and celebrated. The restaurant's loyal patrons added to the glamour and exuberance that was always in the air at La Grenouille, where power lunches and grand dinners were the order of every day.

In a world where formal dining has repeatedly gone in and out of fashion, the starched white tablecloths, scarlet banquettes and fine cuisine at La Grenouille remained constant. The timeless and classic dishes created by Chef Papa Masson were faithfully replicated by his son Philippe, who also refined his culinary skills at Le Notre, Fauchon and The Plaza Athenée, was also responsible for the exuberant floral arrangements. From the ethereal quenelles de brochet to the Grand Marnier soufflé with which so many patrons ended their meals, the food and accompanying rituals were reassuringly familiar.

An enormous amount of love, commitment and dedication went into making

La Grenouille such an iconic destination. The closing marks the end of an era in New York City, but its legacy will live on in the hearts of all our friends and so many who enjoyed the great pleasures of this cherished restaurant.

We thank you all for your loyal devotion throughout the years and through this difficult crossroad.

With much love and blessings,

Philippe

The Buster Frog Trio plays Fridays and Saturdays

On a somber day in May 2020, we lost one of our beloved backroom Captains Bertrand Martenville to Covid. NYC was in the front line, held hostage by fear of the unknown. We were shut down indefinitely. "52nd Swing Street" lost its beat with silence filling our ghost town. It was during the darkest of nights when looters ransacked Madison Avenue that The Buster Frog Trio came into existence.  The audition went on, the band was born. Flowers and food could not suffice to heal all our wounds. It was with live music and show that a most unexpected magical trinity of blues, bubbly and blooms came to life at La Grenouille.

The cynicism of few could not dissuade the encouragements received, notably from " America's Poet" Mr. Steve DePass, Miss Judy Collins and especially a prominent businessman who believed in the voice, guitar and performance that I displayed on a nightly basis and insisting that a stage and sound system be added to our dining room. As a flight formation missing a wing, we removed all the tables from Bertrand's station honoring his memory and all of those we lost during the darkest days.

In 1962, with a dream and a Double Bourbon Manhattan, Gisèle Masson sent a wire to her husband, Charles: “Congratulations! You are the owner of 3 East 52nd Street! Find a name!” On December 19th,1962, during a blizzard and newspaper strike, La Grenouille was born. From that day on, a loving following began with an array of stars bringing their glamour to La Grenouille.
